Required calories to our body can be obtained from carbohydrates only. As these food items are used by everyone, so we can say no one can have lack of carbohydrates in our body. One gram of carbohydrates will gives us 4 calories of energy.

Carbohydrates is the combination of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and atoms. By following these atoms number carbohydrates have been classified into three types.

Types of Carbohydrates

  1. Monosaccharides
  2. Disaccharides
  3. Polysaccharides


Monosaccharides will be available in food items like glucose, fructose, honey and others. These will be mixed in blood and gives us instant new energy to our body. Monosaccharides are more helpful for people who is growing, pregnant women and people suffering with fever.


Disaccharides become monosaccharides after mixed with enzymes and gives us calories, which is needed for our body. Disaccharides can get from the source of sugar, maltose, lactose and others.


Polysaccharides is the mixture of many monosaccharides! Say example after eating of food (ex: potato) will take some reactions in our body and become a monosaccharides and gives us required calories of energy to our body.

Daily carbohydrates

Every human being need aproximately 445 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Low Carbohydrate Foods

  1. Bean, Cabbage, Tomato, Bittergourd, Cucumber etc are having only 3% of carbohydrates.
  2. Brinjal, carrot, pepper etc are having about 6% of carbohydrates only.
  3. Onion, grapes, orange etc are having about 9% of carbohydrates only.

Function of Carbohydrates

After taking of any food contained carbohydrates will mix with water in the body and faced some chemical reactions. As soon the food enters into the stomach, it will attracted to some chemical reactions and later it will digested in entering of small intestine.

What will happen if we take excess carbohydrates ?

If we could have taken excess carbohydrates then we will face many types of problems. They used to give some mental disturbance.

Example: Obesity, increases size of stomach, diabetes, some types of heart related diseases will invite us.

So we must take required (proteins, fats, minerals and salts with) carbohydrates, then only we will have good digestion system and gets you enough calories of energy to our body.
